KJV vs. The Message Bible — Good vs. Garbage

The Bible admonishes us to, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth. . .” (Eph. 4:29) The Mess routinely speaks “corrupt communication” with some curse words in its pages. This is just one example..

Micah 3:5-7

The Message (MSG)

5-7Here is God’s Message to the prophets,
the preachers who lie to my people:
“For as long as they’re well paid and well fed,
the prophets preach, ‘Isn’t life wonderful! Peace to all!’
But if you don’t pay up and jump on their bandwagon,
their ‘God bless you’ turns into ‘God damn you.’
Therefore, you’re going blind. You’ll see nothing.
You’ll live in deep shadows and know nothing.
The sun has set on the prophets.
They’ve had their day; from now on it’s night.
Visionaries will be confused,
experts will be all mixed up.
They’ll hide behind their reputations and make lame excuses
to cover up their God-ignorance.”

Micah 3:5-7

King James Version (KJV)

Thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.

Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.

Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded: yea, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God.

What kind of message is The Message? Read more here.

The Message DELETES the reference to God’s holy name, ADDS requests not voiced by Jesus, and changes the meaning of other verses. Follow the link and learn more about the phrase, “As above, so below.”

   Matthew 6:9-13

“Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

The Message:

“Our Father in heaven,

Reveal who you are.

Set the world right;

Do what’s best –

As above, so below.

Keep us alive with three square meals.

Keep us forgiven with you

and forgiving others.

Keep us safe

from ourselves and the Devil.

You’re in charge!

The Message distorts the relationship between God the Father and Jesus the Son:

   John 10:30
“I and the Father are one.”

John 14:28

“…The Father is greater than I.”

The Message:

“I and the Father are one heart and mind.”

The Message:

“The Father is the goal and purpose of my life.”

The Message distorts the nature of  God:

Romans 15:13:

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power (His sovereign power and authority) of the Holy Spirit.”

The Message:

Oh! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!

Matthew 5:13-16

The Message (MSG)

Salt and Light

13“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. 14-16“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:13-16

King James Version (KJV)

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

There are many many more examples of how “The Message Bible” distorts the true Word of God. Please do your research before diving into a New Age Bible.

What we need is truth – the whole truth and nothing but.  Yet Peterson (The Messages author), willing to use words like consecration and antithetical, refuses to use the word sanctification and deletes “holy is your name”  from the Lord’s prayer. How can we cry over sin and apostasy when the holiness of God is concealed from His Word?

As we face an explosion of false teachings and spiritual substitutes both in churches and in the world around us, we had better be faithful stewards.  It’s time to awaken all God’s people to test, guard and follow the truth our King has committed to us. Therefore,

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

 2 Timothy 4:1-5
